Copper River Romance #6

Grass and Blue Skies

Rate this book
On crutches and no longer able to fly jets, Brett is grateful to have come home alive instead of in a box. Though he’s still got his leg, there’s a lot of pain, too so a relative sends him to see the pretty herbalist who helps people with pain and nerve problems. One look at her and Brett wants more than pain relief.
Nikee has a secret room beneath her greenhouse full of pot plants. The woman began growing medical marijuana several years ago to help her father after a bad accident, and she has no plans to quit. Hopefully telling Brett about the grow operation won’t cost her a relationship with the man.
If the tender balance of her relationship with Brett isn’t enough, someone else has discovered her secret. He wants her crop and will do anything to cash in on her work, but Nikee can't go to the Troopers for help.
Can a woman, an old man, and an ex-jet jock keep the nefarious character out of her medicinal pot?

Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here for 37 years, I have survived -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and live in a cabin. I used a fish wheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and only roadie. I cut firewood on shares, worked as a cocktail waitress, then as a paralegal for over 26 years. I hold the #80 press card as a reporter for the Copper Valley Views newspaper which ceased publication in the 1980s. I've been writing stories since junior high. Retired now, I can devote my time to what I love.
I came to Alaska by way of Arizona and California. I experienced the building of the pipeline up close. Then my second husband and I moved to Wasilla to get warm. It hardly ever drops past -25 in South Central Alaska. I never thought I would love it so much I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. I lost my first husband to alcohol. My second husband, the love of my life died as a result of disease. We were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years . I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with.

I read “Grass and Blue Skies” literally in two days and absolutely loved it! I couldn’t put it down. First of all, the characters are extremely well written and I couldn’t help but admire Nikee’s bravery and desire to help people, even though sometimes deep inside she was having doubts about her not so legal activity – growing marijuana for medicinal purposes. But does a technically illegal operation matter that much if the girl is helping her father manage his pain after a bad accident, and also keeping other patients alive, who quite possibly could die of liver failure due to multiple medications they have to take?
Brett, a Navy pilot who suffered terrible trauma and is forced to quit his service and relocate back to Alaska, finds himself immediately attracted to this beautiful girl, and soon learns her secret. But it’s not only him who finds out about Nikee’s secret operation, and soon they both have to face the real danger of being robbed by a young thug…
The theme raised in this wonderfully written novel is particularly important: maybe the marijuana is not such an evil as everybody pictures it, of course if it’s used for a good cause, and what if legalizing it would indeed save people’s lives?
A very kind, sexy and inspiring story! I really can’t recommend it enough!

Great read!!!!!

I really liked this book! I grew up in the "Basin" and have spent the last 19 years in "The Valley" so I was able to recognize all the landmarks. It is an easy read and is an engaging story. Well done! It will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

I always enjoy reading Cherime MacFarlaine's books, but I think this is my favourite so far.

After surviving an accident, Brett's severe pain led him to consider alternative medicine. He was recommended somebody who could give him what he needed and made an appointment to meet with the woman at her farm. When he set eyes on Nikee, it was love at first sight. Nikee felt the same about Brett.

While Brett and Nikee developed a romance, somebody became desperate to find out where his grandmother got her special tea and discovered that Nikee was behind the high quality medicinal weed. Greedy, he was willing to do just about anything to find out where the marijuana plants were so that he could steel them and make a big profit by selling to stoners. After a break-in at the barn and the realization that she was being closely watched, Nikee became afraid. She knew she couldn't go to the police for help because of the illegal aspects of her work, but Brett came up with a plan to keep the secret grow operation from being compromised. Unfortunately, something unexpected happened and both characters had to face a bigger problem.

I loved how this nice love story with erotic scenes also had drama and suspense. It was a nice touch and kept me wanting to find out more. I also loved how the author went right back to the romance once the major drama was over. It makes the reader feel good again.

On another note, I liked how the author mentioned characters from her other books; it kept them alive. I enjoyed finding out how everyone I read about before were doing as a sideline to the main story and look forward to reading the next volume when it comes out.

An action-packed romance that does not shy away from some challenging and thought provoking issues.

The realism of this book made it a compelling page-turner. I took to both Brett and Nikee straight away. Nikee will do anything to keep her Dad's terminal illness at bay, and if that means growing marijuana to ease his pain and slow down the progression of his disease then so be it. Her compassion to help people lands her in a whole bunch of trouble. But she is determined to carry on despite the risks to herself.

Brett's life has been shattered. He is severely wounded and is incredibly lucky to keep his leg, his spirit and determination is inspirational. He will one day, fly again.

I thought the romance between Brett and Nikee was believable and incredibly well-crafted. A compelling read. I Highly Recommend.

A well crafted story, authentic in feel and dialogue, lively with drama and romance.
I enjoyed how the author handled the subject of medical marijuana, sensitive as well as serving as a useful plot device.
The chemistry is working well and the flow is right too. An enjoyable read.
